Woodlands Xavier Cabernet Sauvignon 2018: A Margaret River Classic in the Making

Some wines are made to be enjoyed straight away. Others arrive with a little more to say, asking you to slow down, give them some air and discover what lies beneath the surface. The 2018 Woodlands Xavier Cabernet Sauvignon belongs firmly in the second category. Powerful, concentrated and beautifully structured, this is a wine that demonstrates precisely why Margaret River has earned its place among Australia's great Cabernet Sauvignon regions.

A family legacy rooted in Margaret River

The story begins in 1973, when David and Heather Watson established Woodlands Vineyard in the Wilyabrup area of Margaret River, Western Australia. At the time, Margaret River was still establishing its reputation as a serious fine wine region. The Watson family recognised the potential of its maritime climate, distinctive soils and long growing season, planting Cabernet Sauvignon alongside varieties including Malbec and Cabernet Franc.

An exceptional vintage and meticulous winemaking

The 2018 growing season was outstanding across Margaret River, producing fruit of remarkable concentration and structure. Woodlands sourced the grapes from its original Cabernet Sauvignon plantings, alongside small contributions from Malbec and Cabernet Franc. These vines grow on a south facing slope, where sandy loam overlays gravel and clay. The vineyard's east west row orientation encourages gradual ripening, allowing the grapes to develop complexity while retaining their natural freshness.

The final blend comprises 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec and 1% Cabernet Franc. The grapes were hand picked , then destemmed, hand sorted and fermented in small stainless steel fermenters. Half the wine underwent spontaneous fermentation without added yeast, allowing naturally occurring vineyard and winery yeasts to contribute to the fermentation process.

Tasting

Pour a glass and the first impression is the extraordinary depth of colour, an intense, almost opaque purple. The nose initially presents a tightly wound personality, but patience pays dividends. Give it time to breathe and layers of blackcurrant, dark berries and red fruits begin to emerge, accompanied by violet, summer herbs, white pepper, juniper and finely textured French oak.

On the palate, Xavier is unapologetically powerful. Concentrated dark fruit takes centre stage, supported by ripe, velvety tannins and a firm structural backbone. Notes of spice and bay leaf gradually reveal themselves, while the oak provides savoury complexity rather than simply adding sweetness or vanilla. Despite its considerable weight, the wine maintains focus and direction, with a long finish that leaves the impression of a Cabernet Sauvignon built for the long haul.

This is not a wine to rush. Decanting will help reveal its layers if opening a bottle now, although its structure and concentration suggest that further time in the cellar will reward those prepared to wait.

Awards and critical acclaim

The 2018 Xavier has received exceptional recognition from leading Australian wine critics. It earned 98 points from Erin Larkin in the Halliday Wine Companion, 98 points from Ray Jordan in The West Australian Wine Guide 2022, and 98 points from Huon Hooke in The Real Review.

Such consistently high scores underline the wine's quality and its standing among the finest expressions of Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon. Rather than relying on sheer concentration alone, Xavier combines power with definition, fine grained tannins and the capacity to develop greater complexity over time.

A Cabernet Sauvignon worth waiting for

Woodlands Xavier 2018 is a compelling example of what happens when an exceptional vintage meets mature vineyard plantings, thoughtful winemaking and a family deeply connected to its land. It has the richness and structure to appeal to lovers of powerful Australian reds, but also the restraint and savoury complexity that Cabernet enthusiasts appreciate in the great wines of Bordeaux.

Pair it with a beautifully cooked rib eye steak, slow roasted lamb or a rich mushroom dish. Better still, tuck a bottle away and revisit it over the coming years. Xavier may have been named after a young family member, but this is no youthful, uncomplicated Cabernet. It is a serious Margaret River wine with pedigree, personality and a long future ahead of it. Some wines make an impression at first pour; this one has the potential to make an impression for decades.
