Margaret River Excellence in Every Glass

Some wines make a good first impression, while others tell a story that unfolds with every sip. Churchview The Bartondale Chardonnay belongs firmly in the second category. Produced by Churchview Estate in the renowned Margaret River wine region of Western Australia, this Chardonnay reflects a philosophy that values patience, craftsmanship, and a genuine respect for the vineyard. It is a wine that confidently showcases why Margaret River has earned a global reputation as one of the world's premier Chardonnay-producing regions.

Origins

The Bartondale label represents some of Churchview Estate's finest fruit, sourced primarily from the estate's oldest Chardonnay vineyard, known as Block 31. This small parcel is planted entirely with the prized Gingin clone, celebrated for producing intensely flavoured grapes with exceptional concentration. Only the highest quality barrels are ultimately selected for The Bartondale, making it a flagship expression rather than an everyday release.

Winemaking

The winemaking is as meticulous as the vineyard management. Grapes are hand harvested over several days, allowing each section of the vineyard to be picked at optimal ripeness. Around half of the barrels complete natural malolactic fermentation, adding creaminess and texture, while regular lees stirring enhances richness. After approximately 12 months of oak maturation, every barrel is individually assessed, with only the very best earning a place in The Bartondale blend. This uncompromising selection process contributes to the wine's depth, elegance, and consistency.

Tasting

In the glass, The Bartondale Chardonnay is both generous and refined. Aromas often reveal ripe nectarine, peach, lemon zest, melon, citrus blossom, and subtle notes of toasted almond, brioche, and carefully integrated French oak. On the palate, vibrant citrus acidity balances layers of stone fruit, creamy texture, savoury minerality, and delicate butterscotch nuances. The finish is long, fresh, and beautifully structured, offering a wine that is enjoyable in its youth while rewarding careful cellaring with additional complexity.

Awards and Accolades

Critics and wine judges have consistently recognised The Bartondale Chardonnay for its quality. Recent vintages have earned medals at respected competitions, including a Bronze medal at the 2025 International Wine & Spirit Competition for the 2024 vintage, praised for its balanced fruit and mineral freshness. Earlier vintages have also received strong critical reviews from publications such as Decanter and favourable scores from respected Australian wine reviewers, while the wine has collected medals at Australian wine shows, including recognition at the Perth Royal Wine Awards.

Whether paired with fresh seafood, roast chicken, creamy pasta, or simply enjoyed on its own, The Bartondale is a compelling reminder that exceptional winemaking begins with exceptional vineyards and a commitment to letting nature shine.
