The Tyrrell family story began in 1858, when Edward Tyrrell planted the first vines on the family estate in the Hunter Valley. Over generations, the winery became one of Australia’s most respected producers. Vat 9 Shiraz emerged much later, during the early 1960s, when Murray Tyrrell set out to bottle the very best barrels produced each vintage.

The name itself is wonderfully simple. In the old winery, wines were aged in large wooden vats, each numbered for identification. Vat number nine consistently held exceptional Shiraz, and eventually the name became synonymous with the wine itself. What started as a practical label turned into one of the winery’s most recognizable icons.

Tasting

The grapes for the Vat 9 Shiraz are sourced from the oldest and best blocks on Ashmans property, with the oldest vines dating back to 1892. All of these blocks sit on a strip of red soil that runs through the winery, soil that’s ideal for growing super-premium Shiraz.

Intense purple in colour, lifted spice and a pretty red berry nose with a subtle oak lift. The palate is medium bodied showing soft sweet fruits, subtle oak enhances the mid palate which is complimented by the fine, clean acid structure and long tannins. A classic Vat 9 that will have a long life in the cellar.

Recognition and Reputation

Over the years, Tyrrell’s Vat 9 Shiraz has earned a loyal following among collectors and critics alike. Numerous vintages have received high scores from respected wine reviewers and have taken home medals from international wine competitions. Such accolades reflect not only the quality of the wine but also its consistency from vintage to vintage.

A Wine That Rewards Patience

One of the most appealing qualities of Vat 9 Shiraz is its ability to age gracefully. While it is enjoyable when young, time in the cellar allows the wine to evolve into something even more complex. Fruity notes soften and deepen, giving way to earthy, savoury characteristics that wine enthusiasts treasure.
