The Allure of the Farrside: A Pinot Noir with a View
In the rolling hills of Victoria’s Moorabool Valley, there’s a patch of earth that the Farr family treats with almost reverent care. This is not a vineyard you stumble upon by accident, it’s one you seek out, knowing it has something to say. The By Farr Farrside Pinot Noir was born from this far flung corner of the estate, where the soils lean toward dark volcanic loam and ancient limestone, and the breezes carry whispers of the cool Southern Ocean.
Origins
At the helm is Nick Farr, a winemaker who inherited both his father Gary’s relentless curiosity and his own sharp sense of place. Gary, a legendary figure in Australian Pinot, planted the seeds both literally and philosophically that Nick has grown into a distinctive winemaking voice. The Farrside vineyard is one of the cooler spots on the property, and Nick leans into that, crafting a Pinot that is more about structure, savoury complexity, and a slow unfurling than a quick rush of fruit.

The vines themselves, now mature and well settled, dig deep for nourishment. Their roots travel through layers of stone and clay, and the resulting grapes carry a kind of mineral heartbeat. Fermentation is handled with a mix of whole bunches and gentle extraction, ensuring the wine’s personality remains intact textural, layered, and slightly wild around the edges.
Tasting
In the glass, Farrside Pinot Noir is anything but shy. Aromas rise with black cherry, forest floor, dried herbs, and a faint trace of smoked tea. The palate walks a tightrope between generosity and restraint: dark fruits, savoury spice, and a mineral edge glide over fine, persistent tannins. There’s a lingering echo of earth and graphite in the finish, as if the wine is reminding you exactly where it came from.
Farrside is a Pinot for those who enjoy a bit of mystery in their glass one that doesn’t spill all its secrets at once but rewards patience, conversation, and maybe a second bottle.
