Winemaking and Drinking
Origins
Few Australian wineries embody a sense of tradition and innovation quite like Brokenwood. Founded in 1970 in the Hunter Valley by three Sydney solicitors — Tony Albert, John Beeston, and James Halliday (the future wine critic) — Brokenwood was initially intended to be a hobby vineyard. However, its reputation grew rapidly, and it became one of Australia's most respected boutique wine producers. Although originally best known for its Shiraz, the winery’s exploration into Chardonnay has been equally triumphant, culminating in outstanding vintages like the 2021 release.
The 2021 Brokenwood Chardonnay showcases the benefits of sourcing premium fruit from select cool climate vineyards, primarily from Orange in New South Wales and Beechworth in Victoria. These regions offer elevation and cool growing conditions ideal for Chardonnay, helping to preserve acidity while allowing the fruit to ripen with complexity and balance. Unlike some heavier Australian Chardonnays of the past, Brokenwood’s modern style leans toward restraint and elegance, a reflection of both site selection and careful winemaking.
Tasting
Upon pouring, the wine immediately impresses with a bright straw hue and a subtle green tinge, indicating freshness. On the nose, lifted aromas of white nectarine, citrus blossom, and a hint of roasted cashew speak to partial oak aging and meticulous barrel fermentation. The palate is a study in balance: vibrant stone fruits are supported by zesty lemon curd notes, framed by a creamy texture that never overpowers the inherent minerality. A fine acid backbone ensures that the finish is long, clean, and refreshingly dry.
The 2021 vintage has not gone unnoticed. It received praise at various regional wine shows and was lauded for its purity and finesse in several national competitions. While Brokenwood’s flagship Graveyard Shiraz often garners the headlines, critics and consumers alike increasingly recognize the Chardonnay program for its sophistication and international competitiveness.

In short, the Brokenwood 2021 Chardonnay is a testament to modern Australian white winemaking: expressive yet controlled, luxurious yet restrained. It is an ideal companion for fine seafood, creamy poultry dishes, or simply for those moments when only a top-tier Chardonnay will do.
